Why Public Relations Needs a Makeover

Fun fact: public relations have been around for a pretty long time - I’m talking since the 18th century. From the first use of the printing press to the birth of Twitter, businesses have been trying to reach out to the public and build their brand name. But over time public relations have grown into more than just advertising, it’s become a relationship between brands and consumers.  

Public relations is how your favorite brands become your favorite brands. Businesses with good PR know their target market and communicate with them enough to know what they like and what they don’t like. In today’s society, there are so many ways to for businesses to connect with possible customers, whether it’s magazines, emails, or Facebook posts, small businesses could get lost in the shuffle. In order for you to stand out amongst the masses, you need to have effective public relations, which is constantly evolving in our technologically fueled society. With so many forms of social media, blogs, and websites it’s important to be on top of your game or risk getting left behind.

In 2017 more than a quarter of the U.S. population is made up of millennials, which is the generation born between 1982 and 2000. That’s millions of people, and 67% of them prefer to shop online. It’s important to know your audience and understand what makes them tick, especially with the most diverse and vocal generation. While traditional PR allows you to reach your potential customers on a large scale it doesn’t provide the buyer with the same confidence in your brand as other brands that effectively utilize modern public relations. 

The key to expanding your business rests on the shoulders of your customers and whether they support you enough to share with other people. With multiple social media sites and a multitude of blogs created to vocalize individual opinions and tastes it’s faster and easier to gain more brand awareness through your customers alone.
